Glossary term
Grammar
A writing trait in PTE's automated scoring that assesses the grammatical accuracy of your sentences — subject–verb agreement, tense control, word order and sentence construction. Grammar is marked by algorithm in tasks such as the 200–300-word essay, Summarize Written Text and Summarize Spoken Text, alongside content, form, vocabulary and spelling. Until November 2021 grammar appeared as an 'enabling skill' on the score report; it is now part of the Skills Profile visible only to the test taker, while still contributing to the Writing score on the 10–90 scale.
In plain language
Write accurate, well-controlled sentences rather than showy complex ones — the scorer rewards correctness you can sustain.
