Express Entry

Express Entry is IRCC’s application system for Canada’s main economic immigration programmes. Language ability is one of its largest point factors, stated in CLB levels per skill, and the English tests it accepts are PTE Core, IELTS General Training and CELPIP-General. PTE Academic and IELTS One Skill Retake are not accepted.

Where you meet it

Not on the PTE report. You enter your PTE Core scores in your Express Entry profile and IRCC converts them to CLB levels per skill.

How language points work

Express Entry ranks candidates with the Comprehensive Ranking System, and first official language ability is one of the core factors. Points are awarded per skill for each CLB level from 4 upwards, rising steeply through CLB 7, 8 and 9. Because every skill scores separately, a profile with three skills at CLB 9 and one at CLB 7 earns the CLB 7 points for that skill and may miss programme minimums that require CLB 9 across the board.

IRCC’s own page is explicit about the tests: PTE Core, IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General, and it states that IELTS One Skill Retake is not accepted for Express Entry.

Planning a Core score for the pool

Start from the CLB level your target points need, convert it to four PTE Core scores from the equivalency chart, and add a margin of three or four points per skill. Sit a full Core mock and read the four gaps. Writing is usually the largest, because its CLB thresholds are the highest on the PTE scale, so Write Email, the summaries and dictation spelling are where most Express Entry preparation goes.

Results take days, so retesting after a focused cycle is practical. The PTE Core calculator converts a set of scores and headlines the lowest skill.

Worked example

From a points target to a practice plan

A candidate needs CLB 9 in every skill. Their mock shows Listening 85, Reading 81, Speaking 86, Writing 82. Three skills are already there; Writing is six points short of 88. The plan is entirely Writing: Write Email structure, the two summaries’ word ranges, and a spelling list for dictation, with a retest in five weeks.

What it shows: Express Entry preparation is almost always one skill, and the chart tells you which.

Does Express Entry accept PTE Academic?

No. IRCC accepts PTE Core, IELTS General Training and CELPIP-General for Express Entry. PTE Academic is accepted by Canadian institutions for study permits, not by IRCC for immigration.

Does IRCC accept IELTS One Skill Retake?

No. IRCC states that it does not accept IELTS One Skill Retake for Express Entry. A PTE Core retake is the whole test, and results arrive within days.

What PTE Core scores give the most Express Entry points?

CLB 10 in every skill earns the maximum language points: PTE Core Listening 89, Reading 88, Speaking 89 and Writing 90. CLB 9 in every skill, Listening 82, Reading 78, Speaking 84 and Writing 88, is the common competitive target.
