Score Validity
Score validity is how long a PTE result can be used: two years from the test date for most institutions and for IRCC economic immigration, three years for Australian visa purposes, and without expiry for Canadian citizenship applications. Validity is decided by the receiving organisation, not by Pearson, and it runs from the test date, not the result date.
The report shows the test date. Some reports show a “valid until” date two years on; the receiving organisation’s own rule governs where it differs.
Who decides validity
Pearson keeps reports verifiable for two years and prints a validity date accordingly, but the organisation receiving the score sets the rule it applies. Australia’s Department of Home Affairs asks for a score achieved in the three years before the visa application, depending on the subclass, and does not accept tests taken at home. IRCC requires results less than two years old both when the Express Entry profile is completed and when the permanent-residence application is submitted, refuses applications with expired results, but treats citizenship language evidence as permanent. Universities almost always apply two years, and some apply it to the start of the course rather than the application.
The practical rule is to check the receiving organisation’s page, and to plan the test date from the application date backwards.
Planning the test date
Take the test close enough to the application that it will still be valid at every stage that checks it, including visa lodgement after an offer. A test taken two years before a course starts may be valid for the application and expired by the time a visa is lodged. For multi-stage routes, eighteen months before the last stage is a safe outer limit.
Validity also interacts with rule changes. Australia’s per-skill PTE thresholds from 7 August 2025 apply to tests taken from that date; earlier tests keep the older table until August 2028, which can favour or penalise a candidate depending on their skill profile.

Worked example
A test on 1 March 2024 supports a university application in late 2025 and an offer for a course starting September 2026. The student visa is lodged in June 2026, when the test is 27 months old. The visa authority applies two years; the result is expired and a new test is needed in the busiest month of the process.
