For a UK visa you need the UKVI version of the test, booked as such, at an approved centre. The ordinary PTE Academic does not count, whatever the score.
Glossary term
UKVI
UKVI is UK Visas and Immigration, the Home Office body whose English requirements many UK visa routes must meet through an approved Secure English Language Test. Pearson’s approved tests are PTE Academic UKVI and PTE Home, taken at UKVI-approved centres with enhanced identity checks; a standard PTE Academic score cannot be used for a UK visa.
A UKVI test report carries a Unique Reference Number (URN) that you enter on the visa application. A standard PTE Academic report has no URN.
Which test for which route
Work, study and most skilled routes that require an academic-level test take PTE Academic UKVI: the same 22-task test as PTE Academic, booked under the UKVI name at an approved centre with additional identity checks, and reported with a URN. The score required depends on the route; the Skilled Worker route requires CEFR B2 from 8 January 2026, and the Home Office specifies the score that meets it.
Family, partner and settlement routes require speaking and listening only, at A1, A2 or B1 depending on the stage, which is what PTE Home tests, pass or fail.
Booking the right thing
The mistake that costs the most is booking standard PTE Academic for a UK visa. The content is identical, but the report has no URN and the Home Office will not accept it; the only remedy is to sit the UKVI version. Book the UKVI test explicitly in myPTE, at a centre listed as UKVI-approved, and bring the identity document you registered with.
Universities are different from visas. Many accept standard PTE Academic for admission and only need the UKVI version if they sponsor a visa on the basis of the test; check which they require, because some accept either.
The numbers that matter
| Approved Pearson tests | PTE Academic UKVI; PTE Home (A1, A2, B1) |
|---|---|
| Other approved SELTs | IELTS for UKVI and IELTS Life Skills; LanguageCert SELTs; Trinity SELTs; PSI Skills for English UKVI |
| Skilled Worker route | CEFR B2 from 8 January 2026 |
| Family and settlement routes | A1, A2 or B1 speaking and listening, via PTE Home |
| Validity | 2 years; the URN must be current at application |
| IELTS for UKVI fee | ₹19,250 in India; £257 at British Council UK centres |
Worked example
An applicant scores 72 on standard PTE Academic and applies for a Skilled Worker visa. The application requires a URN from a SELT; the report has none. The score is above the B2 threshold, and it is irrelevant. A PTE Academic UKVI sitting is booked and the timeline slips by a month.
What it shows: The version of the test, not the score, is what UKVI checks first.
Frequently asked questions
Is standard PTE Academic accepted for UK visas?
No. UK visa applications require an approved Secure English Language Test. Pearson’s approved tests are PTE Academic UKVI and PTE Home, taken at UKVI-approved centres and reported with a URN.
What score do I need on PTE Academic UKVI?
It depends on the route. The Skilled Worker route requires CEFR B2 from 8 January 2026, and the Home Office states the corresponding score for each approved test. Check the route page on gov.uk for the current figure.
Is the UKVI test harder than PTE Academic?
No. The test content is the same. The difference is the booking type, the enhanced identity checks at an approved centre, and the URN on the report.
