The real PTE overall is not a simple average — Pearson scores every item, and integrated tasks such as Write From Dictation or Read Aloud feed two skills at once — so treat the estimate as a study-planning aid, not a prediction. If one skill sits well below the others, fix that skill first: it usually drags the overall more than the average suggests. No. Pearson computes the overall from every scored item across the test, including tasks that feed two skills at once (like Write From Dictation or Read Aloud), so it is not a simple average of the four skill scores. This calculator uses the average as a planning proxy — treat the official score report as the only real number.
Under Pearson’s official July 2025 concordance for the enhanced PTE Academic, an overall score of 63–70 aligns with IELTS 7.0. IELTS 7.5 aligns with 71–78, and IELTS 8.0 with 79–85.
It depends on the receiving organisation: many universities ask for 58–65 overall, Australia’s Competent English level for tests taken from August 2025 requires per-skill minimums of Listening 47, Reading 48, Writing 51 and Speaking 54, and competitive targets sit at 79+ (roughly IELTS 8.0). Always confirm the exact requirement for your route.
