Can you say what you mean, including the complicated parts, without going round the houses or repeating yourself? That is range. It is scored on the whole essay, not on individual words.

General Linguistic Range
General Linguistic Range is a 0–6 Write Essay trait that scores how freely and precisely you can express ideas: the variety of expressions available to you, whether complex ideas can be conveyed without repetition or circumlocution, and how much errors interfere with clarity. It is scored by the AI and reviewed by a human expert.

Range is measured on the hard ideas
The 4 descriptor is the hinge: “sufficient to articulate basic ideas” but “limitations evident when conveying complex or abstract ideas, causing repetition, circumlocution and difficulty with formulation”. In other words, the trait is judged where the essay tries to say something abstract, such as why an informed public matters to a democracy. If that sentence takes three attempts or falls back on “very important”, the essay is a 4 no matter how clean the simple sentences are.
Errors count too, but by their effect on clarity. Rare and minor is a 6; occasional with clear meaning is a 5; lapses that still let the main idea through are a 4.
How to write for the top bands
Plan the abstract sentence before you start. Each body paragraph should contain one sentence that states a consequence or a principle, and you should know how you will phrase it. Then vary sentence openings: a paragraph where four sentences begin with “Television is” shows the repetition the 4 descriptor names.
Precision beats rarity. The 6 descriptor says “with ease and precision”; a common word used exactly is precision, and a rare word used approximately is the “imprecision” of the Vocabulary Range 1 descriptor. When you catch yourself going round an idea in three clauses, the fix is usually a single verb: “undermines”, “outweighs”, “depends on”.

“Information is important because if people do not have information they cannot make good decisions and the decisions are not good for the country.” Circumlocution and repetition on a complex idea: 4. “Without reliable information, citizens cannot hold a government to account, and a democracy that cannot be held to account stops being one.” Precise, varied, the idea carried in one movement: 6.

What is the difference between General Linguistic Range and Vocabulary Range?
Vocabulary Range is a 0–2 trait about the words themselves: breadth of repertoire and precision. General Linguistic Range is 0–6 and about the whole system of expression: whether complex ideas can be formulated without repetition or circumlocution, and how much errors interfere. A good vocabulary used in the same three sentence shapes scores 2 on one and 4 on the other.
Does using idioms raise the score?
Idiomatic expression is mentioned in the Vocabulary Range 2 descriptor, and it helps when used naturally. A forced idiom is the imprecision the lower descriptors describe. Precision matters more than idiom on both traits.
Is General Linguistic Range scored on other tasks?
No. It is a Write Essay trait only. The summaries and Write Email score Vocabulary and Grammar on 0–2 scales instead.
