Scoring 79+
Use PTE’s cross-skill scoring to plan a 79-in-every-skill result, not just a 79 overall.

What 79+ actually requires
“79+” means 79 or better in all four skills — the Superior English bar for Australian skilled migration. The overall score is not an average, so this is a planning problem as much as an English problem; every task’s contributions are mapped on the question types pages.
The four tasks that decide it
Four task types carry an outsized share of the scoreboard — and all four are trainable to near-perfection. At 79 you need close to every word in dictation, and consistency across items matters more than any single one.
Speaking: fluency beats accent
Speaking at 79 is a fluency problem, not an accent problem — pronunciation is scored as machine-measured intelligibility.
The recorder stops after [ 3 SECONDS OF SILENCE ] — keep talking:
a wrong word costs one mark, a long pause ends [ THE WHOLE ANSWER ].
Do
- Rehearse the verified template frames until automatic
- Drill pace with easier material when Fluency lags Content
- Finish the final word at full volume
Don’t
- Chase accent perfection
- Stop to self-correct
- Trail off before the mic closes
Writing and reading: discipline scores
Discipline scores: form rules are checked mechanically, and only three tasks in the whole exam carry negative marking.
| Write Essay | 200–300 words — outside the band, Form scores zero (templates) |
|---|---|
| Summarize Written Text | One sentence, ≤ 75 words — no partial credit on Form (templates) |
| Negative marking | Only the two multi-answer MCQs and Highlight Incorrect Words — stop guessing there |
| Reading section | 22–30 minutes, self-paced — a timing collapse costs more than any single question |
The working plan
Structure the weeks around measurement, not repetition: the preparation roadmap sets the weekly shape, and the mock-test guide covers how many mocks you actually need.
- Baseline mock
One complete scored mock under real timing — the plan starts from its section breakdown.
- Daily drills on the four tasks
30-minute blocks on WFD, Repeat Sentence, Read Aloud, R&W Fill in the Blanks.
- One mock per cycle
Confirm the weak skill moved before changing the plan.
- Read traits, not totals
A 76 with low Fluency needs a different week than a 76 with low Content.
