The B2 rule
From 8 January 2026, the UK Skilled Worker route requires English at CEFR B2 — up from B1. For PTE that means PTE Academic UKVI, the SELT version of the test, taken at a UKVI-approved centre with extra identity checks. An ordinary PTE Academic score cannot be used for a UK visa, however high it is.
B2 begins at [PTE 59] in Pearson's published alignment — plan for [59 OR BETTER IN EVERY SKILL], not just overall.
Leave margin: a [65-PER-SKILL] plan survives a bad day; a 59 plan does not.
Requirements vary by route — [HOME OFFICE GUIDANCE] for your visa category is the authority.
UKVI vs ordinary PTE Academic
UKVI test content is identical to ordinary PTE Academic — same sections, same question types, same scoring. Everything you practise transfers; what changes is the booking, the checks, and the number on the report.
| Same exam | Practise with normal PTE Academic materials and mocks — nothing about the content differs |
|---|---|
| Different booking | Book the UKVI version explicitly at an approved SELT centre — the ordinary test at the same centre does not count |
| On the day | Tighter identity checks, and your score report carries the Unique Reference Number (URN) you quote in the visa application |
| PTE Home is separate | A1, A2 and B1 speaking-and-listening levels — family and settlement routes only |
Preparing for a B2 target
A B2 target is moderate on the PTE scale, which makes preparation about consistency rather than peak performance. Many candidates test at B2 already, so one complete mock settles it before you spend weeks preparing — then the preparation plan covers the weekly structure and booking timing.
Do
- Sit a baseline mock first — it may show you are already there
- Keep timing under control across the whole test
- Bank the mechanical marks: word counts, sentence rules, form
Don’t
- Skip items — a skipped answer hurts a 59 target more than an imperfect one
- Let the recorder time out in silence
- Chase a perfect answer when a complete one scores
