PTE Core for Canada PR
The per-skill PTE Core scores CLB 9 actually requires, and a plan that targets your weakest skill first.

What IRCC actually reads
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada reads each of your four skills separately against the Canadian Language Benchmarks — your overall PTE score never appears in an Express Entry calculation. A 90 in three skills cannot rescue an 80 in the fourth, and the PTE Core score calculator converts each skill to its CLB level.
Core, not Academic
For permanent-residence and other economic routes, the test is PTE Core — not PTE Academic. Core uses its own task list and the same 10–90 scale, and its scores are the ones IRCC converts to CLB, so check the Core question types before you drill.

Expect Writing to be the bottleneck
Look at the bands again: Writing requires 88–89 while Reading needs only 78. In practice Writing is the bottleneck for most candidates, and because PTE scores integrated tasks across skills, your writing number is earned partly in listening tasks and vice versa.

Baseline, convert, drill
Start with one complete scored Core mock test and convert each skill with the calculator. The gap report is your plan: skills already inside their CLB 9 band need maintenance only.

- Convert per skill
Mark each skill against its own CLB 9 band, not against 88 across the board.
- Drill the gap, then retest
Practise the two or three task types that feed the skill furthest below its band.
Timing, validity, and booking
Plan your booking backwards from your Express Entry timing, and keep the reschedule rules from the preparation roadmap in mind. Sit the first attempt at least three weeks before you need the score, and recheck the bands — IRCC conversion tables are official policy, so confirm them for your route before booking.
